POST-SUMMARY-HERE

The Beijing Olympic Torch will arrive in London on April 6th and Paris on April 7th, giving Tibetans and Tibet supporters a once in a lifetime opportunity to focus the Olympic spotlight on China's occupation of Tibet. Tibet groups in Europe are planning mass mobilisations in London and Paris on a scale like never before, and are calling on every Tibetan and Tibet supporter in Europe to participate on the 6th and 7th.

We are focusing most attention on London since it will have the largest media presence as the next host of the summer Olympics after Beijing, but want to see thousands of people in both cities. We are asking Tibet groups in France, the Netherlands, and Belgium to travel to Paris and we will send an announcement to these groups as soon as plans for Paris are finalised. We are asking all other Tibet groups in Europe to start mobilising people to go to London using the announcement below.

Please send the announcement to your membership as soon as possible. Feel free to change the contact information for sign-ups to someone in your own organisation, but send all compiled sign-ups to terry@freetibet.org. Please also consider organising transportation to London to make it easier for people to come. If you are organising events for Losar, announce the mobilisation and bring a sign-up sheet to the event. Email me at freya@tibetnetwork.org for a sign-up sheet and small flyer to hand out about London.

See you in London and Paris!
Freya

Tibet (see Name section below for other spellings) is a Plateau region in Central Asia and the indigenous home to the Tibetan people. With an average elevation of 4,900 metres (16,000 ft), it is the highest region on Earth and is commonly referred to as the "Roof of the World."

Tibet is today part of the People's Republic of China (PRC) (with a small part, depending on definitions, controlled by India). As an exclusive mandate, Tibet is also officially claimed by the Republic of China (Taiwan). In the Tibetan sovereignty debate, the government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of Tibet in Exile disagree over when Tibet became a part of China, and whether this incorporation into China is legitimate according to international law. UNESCO and Encyclopædia Britannica[1] consider Tibet to be part of Central Asia, while several academic organizations controversially consider it part of South Asia.

King Songtsän Gampo united many parts of the region in the seventh century. From the early 1600s the Dalai Lamas, and are believed to be the emanations of Avalokiteśvara ("Chenrezig" [spyan ras gzigs] in Tibetan), the bodhisattva of compassion. commonly known as spiritual leaders of the region, have been heads of a centralised Tibetan administration (at least nominally),

Between the 17th century and 1959, the Dalai Lama and his regents were the predominant political power administering religious and administrative authority over large parts of Tibet from the traditional capital Lhasa.
