The Himalaya Range (Sanskrit: हिमालय, IPA pronunciation: [hɪ'mɑlijə]), or Himalayas for short, is a mountain range in Asia, separating the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau. By extension, it is also the name of the massive mountain system which includes the Karakoram, the Hindu Kush, the Toba Kakar, and a host of minor ranges extending from the Pamir Knot. The name is from Sanskrit himālaya, a tatpurusa compound meaning “the abode of snow” (from hima “snow”, and ālaya “abode”; see also Himavat).^[1]As words, the expression “Himalaya Range” is similar to the expression Sierra Nevada.

Together, the Himalayan mountain system is the planet’s highest and home to the world’s highest peaks: the Eight-thousanders, including Mount Everest and K2. To comprehend the enormous scale of this mountain range consider that Aconcagua, in the Andes, at 6,962 m, is the highest peak outside Asia, while the Himalayan system includes over 100 mountains exceeding 7,200 meters.^[2]

The Himalayan system, which includes outlying subranges, stretches across six countries: Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Kashmir and Afghanistan. They are the source of three of the world’s major river systems, the Indus, the Ganga-Brahmaputra, and the Yangtze. Approximately 1.3 billion people live in the drainage basin of the Himalayan rivers.

The range proper runs west to east, from the Indus river valley to the Brahmaputra river valley, thereby forming an arc 2,400 km long, which varies in width from 400 km in the western Kashmir-Xinjiang region to 150 km in the eastern Tibet-Arunachal Pradesh region. VI KFG - 6th Krakow Mountain Film Festival.

We would like to invite you to the biggest annual mountaineering event in Poland - the 6th Krakow Mountain Film Festival. Between 5 and 7 December 2008 there will be an opportunity to admire the best mountain film productions, participate in meetings with the greatest Polish and international climbing stars, watch climbing competitions and also to take part in numerous workshops.

The festival offers an interesting selection of several Polish climbing films, but it also gives an opportunity to catch up with the programmes of the Banff (Canada) and English movie like Psyche, On Sight Alastaira Lee and Committed Dave`a Browna and Paula Diffley`a. This year’s guest stars will be two world class climbers: Johna Bachara - USA and Ines Papert - Germans.

Additionally, numerous and varied events like workshops, attempts at breaking the world record in jumps, slideshows, outdoor equipment fairs and first aid course will certainly make the festival worth visiting by anyone whose passions are mountains and extreme outdoor sports.

W ciągu trzech dni w Krakowie gościć będzie wielki alpinistyczny świat. A w nim wybitne górskie osobowości, podróżnicy, świetni fotograficy, film, pokazy multimedialne, dyskusje, zawody sportowe, muzyka etc. Słowem prawdziwe święto gór, którego nie można przegapić.

W tym roku KFG będzie gościć zagraniczne osobistości - Niemkę Ines Papert oraz Amerykanina Johna Bachara oraz plejadę polskich himalaistów i wspinaczy, a wśród nich, m.in.: Kingę Baranowską, Piotra Morawskiego, Leszka Cichego, Macieja Ciesielskiego, Sławomira Cyndeckiego, Wojciecha Kozuba, Michała Króla, Jacka Kudłatego, Jakuba Radziejowskiego, Piotra Sztabę, Roberta Szymczaka, Tomasza Walkiewicza.

Miłośnicy filmu górskiego będą mogli również śledzić zacięty wyścig polskich produkcji o Grand Prix KFG 2008. Po raz kolejny w konkursie polskiego filmu zobaczymy kilkanaście najlepszych obrazów o tematyce górskiej polskiego autorstwa.

Festiwal Krakowski to również wystawy czołowych polskich fotografików z dziedziny gór i alpinizmu, gorące dyskusje o ekologii, zasadach bezpieczeństwa i wspinania w górach. Ciekawie zapowiadają się dwie dyskusję poświęcone ochronie przyrody. W tym roku również nie zabraknie interaktywnych kursów lawinowych oraz paneli dotyczących najważniejszych zasad bezpiecznego poruszania się po górach. Swoje warsztaty, prowadzone przez profesjonalistów z firmy Sigma, będą również mieli miłośnicy fotografii cyfrowej.

Ważnym elementem będzie również kiermasz sprzętu i odzieży outdoorowej.
